The Importance Auto Liability Insurance

The Importance Auto Liability Insurance

red carInsuring your car requires care and thought. After all, you want to get the right plan for your vehicles’ and your family’s security. However, there’s another factor that you must consider, and that is your legal obligation to carry car insurance.

It might surprise you to learn that the law requires you to carry auto insurance, namely liability coverage. Still, this rule exists because coverage is there to protect both you and others from the countless recovery costs that might beckon following car wrecks. Kentucky law is therefore very strict in making sure you always meet your coverage obligations. Let’s take a closer look.

What is auto liability insurance?

A liability is something that is your responsibility. When you run a business, it is your responsibility to take care of your customers and employees. When you buy a home, you need to create a safe environment for yourself and others. And when you drive, you have a duty to do so safely.

However, we all make mistakes. If you have an accident, then it might be because of something you did. This means that you are at fault for the accident. In many cases, this compels you not only to pay for your own damage, but also the damage you did to others.

To pay for these third-party damages, you can turn to auto liability insurance. This coverage is designed to pay for the bodily injuries and property damage that you cause to other drivers, pedestrians, vehicles or buildings as a result of your mistakes.

Why is this coverage required?

Kentucky is an at-fault insurance state. This means that all registered drivers must carry auto liability insurance in order to keep their driving privileges.

Liability insurance enables you to take financial responsibility for the harm you cause others. States that have at-fault insurance laws require this coverage because if the rules assign blame to you, then you need a way to cover third-party losses. Overall, auto liability insurance is the best way for you to do so. It makes you both a more responsible driver and a safer one.

What coverage does Kentucky require?

Kentucky drivers cannot buy just any liability coverage. The required minimum coverage is:

- $25,000 Bodily Injury Liability Insurance per person (for one person injured)

- $50,000 Bodily Injury Liability Insurance per accident (for all persons injured)

- $25,000 Property Damage Liability Insurance

-or-

- A $60,000 Combined Single Limit (CSL) policy.

Most drivers choose much higher liability coverage limits. This is a great option because it will help you receive much more coverage for at-fault accidents without a massive increase in your premiums. Never hesitate to increase your benefits to your advantage.
